It was really interesting today that I was able to have this conversation with some brothers and sisters about being word centered or “holy spirit” centered (referring to spiritual gifts). I think there should be obvious reliance on both, but I think reliance on the word results in a reliance on the holy spirit. Furthermore, John Piper makes its clear that the word is the ultimate authority and that we test everything with the word, not vice versa; spiritual gifts are subordinate to the authority of the word. This is especially true because humans are naturally depraved and sinful and therefore have such an imperfect understanding, especially in the case of prophecy.
